Everyone thinks about how a rug is washed. Almost no one thinks about how it’s dried — yet drying is where a huge share of rug damage actually happens. A rug that’s washed perfectly but dried carelessly can still emerge with mildew, shrinkage, a skewed shape, or migrated dyes. A wet rug is a vulnerable rug. If it dries too slowly or stays damp in the foundation, mildew takes hold, producing that musty smell and, in bad cases, rot. If it dries unevenly, natural fibers shrink at different rates and the rug can ripple or skew out of square — a particular risk for cotton and wool. And as moisture wicks upward through certain fibers during drying, it can carry dyes or natural sugars to the surface, causing dye migration or the yellow-brown discoloration called browning that ruins viscose rugs. Thick, dense pieces like shag and flokati hold far more water and take longer, as do heavy wool rugs. We never rush a rug out before its foundation is completely dry, because returning a rug that’s damp deep inside is exactly what causes mildew and odor later. This careful, complete drying is one reason professional rug cleaning has a turnaround of several days to two weeks — and why it can’t be replicated by a quick on-site pass.
