In many cases, the answer is rug resizing: carefully cutting the rug down and re-finishing the new edge so it fits your space and looks like it was always that size. Resizing is the right solution in several situations. You’ve inherited or bought a rug that’s too large for the room and want it to fit properly. A runner or rug is slightly too wide for a hallway or landing. One end of a rug is badly damaged or worn — sometimes removing the damaged section and re-finishing is more economical than a large repair. Or you simply want to reshape an odd-sized piece. You can’t just cut a rug with scissors — the moment you do, the cut edge begins to unravel, because you’ve severed the foundation warps and wefts that hold the knots. Proper resizing means cutting along the right line, immediately securing the cut foundation so it can’t come apart, and then re-finishing the edge to match the rug. Skip or rush any of those steps and the rug frays and fails. Honesty matters here. We can make a rug smaller or narrower, remove a damaged end, and reshape many pieces — but we can’t make a rug larger; there’s no way to add original weave that doesn’t exist. Very intricate borders can also limit where a clean cut is possible without disrupting the design, and some fine or antique rugs are better preserved at their original size than cut.
