Silk is the most luxurious — and most delicate — fiber in the rug world. A fine silk Qum or Hereke can hold over a million knots per square meter, and its brilliant sheen comes from light reflecting off long, smooth protein filaments. Not every rug sold as “silk” is silk. Many affordable pieces are woven from viscose, a wood-derived cellulose marketed as “art silk” that behaves completely differently — and far worse — in water.
