Fine Tibetan Hand-Knotted Rugs
Tibetan rugs are like the people of Tibet, unique and special in their own way. Living on the Tibetan highland gave rise to a unique culture from the surroundings with little to no influence. This isolation has led to a unique culture with a very distinct identity over time. Handmade Tibetan rugs are not separated from this tremendous, strong, and proud culture. Tibetan rugs are well known for their distinct style, pattern, and quality which leads to high collecting desirability. Tibetan wool is rich in lanolin and once woven can be one of the softest textures resembling Wool and Silk rugs in their feeling. Original Tibetan rugs are crafted from the Tibetan sheep wool grazing from the highland of Tibet and the Himalayas. This landscape provides the craftsmen with other raw materials for dyeing the wool and creating masterpieces that last for centuries. Dyeing materials that are found on these high slopes and plateaus provide the weaver with colors such as blue, gray, yellow, and brown belonging to this area.
Tibetan rugs are among the world's best rugs for their quality, artistic values, and use of symbolic iconology. The style of weaving and the patterns are distinctly different from other cultures such as Persians. These patterns are mostly driven by the important cultural symbols and beliefs of the Tibetan people. Some of these patterns are geometric rugs, Gau design rugs, Kanden rugs, local motifs influenced by Chinese patterns, iconic tiger rugs, Shaggy Wangden prayer rugs, dragon rugs, mythical snow lions, lotus blossoms, and religious Buddhist symbols, meditation smaller rugs for Tibetan monks.
Prior to the British invasion of Tibet in 1903-4, most of the rugs were made for domestic use. As time passed on the demand for these high-quality hand-knotted rugs increased. Also, the weaving art of Tibet traveled to India and Nepal and changed to more modern designs provided and demanded by the westerners. Which lead to the exportation of a large number of Tibetan rugs from India and Nepal to supply the western world with larger Tibetan hand-knotted rugs.
Hand-Knotted Rugs vs Hand-Tufted Rugs
Hand-Knotted Tibetan rugs are crafted by hand, whereas Hand-Tufted Tibetan rugs are made by machine stitching. Hand-Tufted rugs are not as durable and will not last for a long time. At the time of purchase, Newer Rugs are normally tagged with a label at the back corner with information about the company that produced the rug. It is not easy but in order to distinguish between Hand-Knotted rugs and Hand-Tufted rugs look for a straight and standard line which indicates the machine-made (Hand-Tufted Rugs), whereas hand-knotted rugs are more uneven in terms of knots size and straightness.
